Pet memorials are an important part of the grieving process. If keeping pet urns at home is part of your long-term plan, it’s helpful to start considering the costs involved with pet cremation. Get to know the options so you can make the best choice for your pet and your budget.

Cost of Pet Cremation: An Overview

Pet cremations can cost $30 to $300 in the United States. Why the range? Precise estimates are tricky to confirm because there are so many variations that affect the total cost of the pet cremation process. In a nutshell, there are three major factors that influence cost: size of pet, communal vs. individual cremation, and region.

Cost Variations by Pet Size

You might be surprised to find that two different dog breeds can get two different price quotes for cremation. After all, isn’t each dog just as valuable and loved as the next? While the size of the dog doesn’t affect the quality of the cremation or care involved, it does affect the expenses incurred for the crematory, including the materials, labor, prep work, and time needed to complete the cremation process.

Dogs are often grouped by weight categories, with little ones weighing less than 30 pounds (Chihuahuas and Pomeranians) costing about $100 cheaper than those weighing closer to 100 pounds (Great Danes and Mastiffs). Cats don’t usually have as much of a price difference due to breed, since most are under 30 pounds.

Cost Variations by Privacy

Another factor that affects pet cremation costs is the degree of privacy requested. Some crematories offer three pet cremation options: private, partitioned, and communal.

  • Private Pet Cremation – In a private ceremony, only one pet is present in the cremation chamber. This comes with the largest price tag, starting at about $150, but it also ensures that the ashes are absolutely exclusive to your pet, since they’re alone in the chamber.
  • Partitioned Pet Cremation – Costing $50-$150, the partitioned method is semi-private, meaning multiple animals share a cremation chamber but are kept separately so that their ashes can be gathered with minimal mixing.
  • Communal Pet Cremation – Starting at $30, this is the most affordable pet cremation option. Several pets share a cremation chamber and ashes are not returned to the pet owners.

It’s important to note that not all crematories offer all three options. Be sure to clarify with the crematory or vet what the process entails before choosing a cremation service.

Cost Variations by Region

Finally, location can also influence the cost of pet cremations. Just as the cost of housing and food may differ between big cities and small towns, so can cremation costs. Densely populated areas, like New York, Seattle, Chicago, or Los Angeles may have higher pet cremation costs. However, they may also have more options and services available for pet owners to consider.

Additional Service Fees

Keep in mind that other necessary services will add to the total cost. Filing fees, vet bills, transportation fees, and hidden expenses may appear on the final bill.

Pet Cremation is Often the Most Affordable & Practical Option

Making small memorials and pet keepsakes possible, cremation remains a preferred option following the loss of a beloved dog or cat. While they may be gone from this world, keeping their ashes in a handmade pet urn close by can provide great solace in the years ahead – and that’s certainly worth the cost.
